Entering a new space that was previously lived in? Then it’s time to hit the reset button. You can do so by simply burning some Sage and or a Palo Santo to clear out the previous residents energy.
Saging is an act of wafting the smoke of white sage around yourself, home and your belongings to cleanse the energy. It not only cleanses spirit, but also purifies the air around you. It’s the perfect way to start fresh with clear good vibes. Here’s why and how:
Burning sage is an ancient ritual that’s magic healing powers still hold true in modern day. The ritual of sage burning has its roots in Native American tradition. Today, people burn sage and other holy herbs to cleanse a space or environment of negative energy, to generate wisdom and clarity, and to promote healing.
WHY?
Moving into a new home or office space is a perfect time for sage burning. Using it to clear the previous owner’s energy and set your own intention for the space. Not just limited to new spaces; you can sage your home any time you feel the need to, whether you want to energetically reset or just chill out a bit. You can think of it like clearing the slate for more positivity to enter your space. Bad vibes be GONE.
HOW?
First things first…S A F E T Y – Always use caution + stay present, being mindful to never let the burning sage stay unattended for any reason. Open windows and doors to create airflow, take care not to inhale too much of the smoke. (also, see below for a smoke free option)
TO SAGE YOUR HOME –
Light one end of the wand. Carefully allow the flame to go out so that the tips of the dried leaves are smoldering slowly, and let the smoke billow up. You can blow on the end to release more smoke and fan the smolder, but keep your face far away (at least two feet), because it’s typical for little sparks of ash to break off, and you don’t want them in your face.
Start to waft around your space and through your different rooms with your intention in mind. Starting in one corner and “pushing” energy toward the door can be a good way to release bad vibes. Pay special attention to wafting in corners and near mirrors, as well as high-traffic areas like hallways and doorways. Also, pay extra attention to windows.
You can get expressive here with your waving, but always remain conscious of the fact that you’re holding a burning object. Also, keep an eye out for those fallen ashes and put them out immediately. Use a fireproof dish to catch those ashes as you go.
FINISH WITH INCENSE OR PALO SANTO –
Ignite one end of your Palo Santo stick, hold at about a 45 degree angle pointing the tip down toward the flame. Allow it to burn for about 30 secs to 1 minute and then blow out. Move about your home to clear the negative energy. The rich smell will also bring peace and clarity to the moment along with good feelings. When finished, place the stick in a fire proof bowl of metal, glass or clay. The glow will end on its own unless you blow on the ember which will keep the smoke going. Use your ‘Palo Santo’ to burn away any negative energy in your space.
